Many
of my childhood heros include the great mountaineers, mostly those who
have pushed the boundaries of endurance and captured the imagination of
many. These include of course Sir Edmund Hillary, Sherpa Tensing and some
of our own local heros such as Doug Scott and Sir Chris Bonnington. So
it a thrill to be involved with such a unique opportunity that this charity
trek will give. Not only to be involved with two of our best known mountaineering
legends, but also to be able to give something back to one of the last
remaining places of true beauty and adventure on the planet.
I have been lucky enough to be involved in a number of high altitude treks and expeditions, including Sikkam, Annapurna and Kilimanjaro over the years. Although I still enjoy walking the mountains and peaks here in the UK, particularly in Dartmoor close to where I now live, nothing gives me greater pleasure than exploring the moors along with my son Joe (now eight and already a keen climber and trekker)!
In addition to my passion for mountains, living in mid Devon I also keep bees, chickens and a verity of other wildlife which keep us pretty occupied. My current favorite read is Annapurna by Maurice Herzog, leader of the French Himalayan expedition in 1950 which captures the essence of adventure and although over 50 years old still remains relevant today.
Although my profession (Information Technology) keeps me busy and away from the mountains(!) I’m always pleasantly surprised at how many of my business partners and colleagues also share in my excitement and wish to be associated with adventure of this type. I’m sure as we begin to promote this charity trek that this will be reflected in the number of high profile sponsors who have already expressed an interest in our venture.
I hope that you can share in this adventure with us as it unfolds and
will contribute towards something quite unique and that will remain a
legacy for many generations to come.
